Did you know that 97% of wildflower meadows have been lost in Britain since the 1940s? Herefordshire is lucky to still have some wonderful wildflower meadows offering a rare window into a landscape now long forgotten in today's intensively farmed countryside.
Herefordshire Wildlife Trust has guardianship of over 170 hectares of precious wildflower meadow at sites such as Birches Farm, Stockings Meadow and Common Hill.
Protecting these precious habitats is not easy and requires traditional management techniques and specialist tools to maintain a habitat which supports the rich and diverse plant life. This can cost upwards of £150 per hectare a year to maintain these gorgeous meadows, including laying boundary hedgerows, managing livestock grazing, clearing any scrub, and managing the hay cut. We also harvest seed from these sites and take green hay to other grassland sites to improve the diversity of grasses and flowers there, so increasing the number of beautiful meadows within the county.
A gift in your Will can support Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's vital work to preserve and grow our wildflower meadows for future generations to enjoy.
