The islands completed in 2019 have already been a great hit with wildlife; this spring Oystercatcher successfully nested at the Lake for the first time and a whimbrel was recorded for the first time in nearly 20 years. The islands that will be completed this autumn will continue to attract more birds to nest and feed at Bodenham Lake. Particularly wading birds, which feed in exposed mud and ground nesting birds, which favour islands for safe nesting away from predators and limited tree cover for good visibility.
These works are primarily funded by the European Regional Development Fund, with additional funds from the Environment Agency, Herefordshire Ornithological Club, donors to the Re-wilding Bodenham Lake appeal, the Hamamalis Trust and Hereford Community Foundation.
