Top Seasonal Picnic Ideas

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, there's no better way to enjoy the great outdoors than with a picnic. A low-cost and environmentally friendly way to dine out and a great way to enjoy some of the freshest, most flavourful produce of the season. Here's a guide to some fantastic fruits that are in season in June and some creative ways to include them in your picnic.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb's tart flavour pairs beautifully with sweeter fruits like strawberries. Prepare a strawberry-rhubarb pie or crumble to bring along, or make a rhubarb compote to spread on bread or mix into desserts.

Strawberries

Strawberries are at their peak in June. Pack a basket of fresh strawberries for a simple, sweet treat. They also pair wonderfully with a bit of balsamic glaze for a sophisticated snack.

Tomatoes (Greenhouse Grown)

Create a refreshing caprese salad with fresh mozzarella, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil. Or, pack some cherry tomatoes for a quick and easy snack.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Hand Pies

  • Prepare a simple pie dough and roll out small circles.

  • Fill with a mixture of diced strawberries and rhubarb, sugar, and a bit of cornstarch.

  • Fold over and seal the edges.

  • Bake until golden brown and pack for your picnic.

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try out this seasonal delight from famous British chef Rachel Green, Summer Supper Pea Salad!
