The 47-acre Arboretum is well-known for its autumn display, with trees turning vibrant shades of red, gold, and burgundy in November. The Autumn Garden is a highlight, featuring Japanese maples, rowans, tupelos, and liquidamber trees. Other areas to explore include the Redwood Grove, which is especially striking in the autumn light, the orchard with its ripening fruits, and the Commemorative Woodland, which offers a peaceful spot among falling leaves. A free Autumn Tree Trail is available at the Visitor Centre or can be downloaded from the Queenswood website.
Surrounding the Arboretum, 123 acres of native woodland provide a quieter and more subtle autumn atmosphere. Even on busier days, this larger woodland offers a peaceful escape and is home to a variety of wildlife.
According to Reserve Officer Anna Tindall, " Autumn is a wonderful time at the arboretum. As the last of the summer flowers fade and the weather becomes cooler and wetter, the turning leaves provide a vibrant splash of colour to cheer us all. Keep an eye out as you walk through the arboretum for the different coloured berries on our specimen rowans, crab apples and thorns.
The woodland is bustling with creatures preparing for winter; enjoy taking a moment to watch the squirrels chasing each other through the canopies, the rustle of leaves as mice seek food and material for their nests and listen to the mating calls of fallow deer during the rut. "
In addition to its natural beauty, Queenswood hosts a series of autumn events, including UK Fungus Day on Saturday, 5th October, and a Celebration of Nature-Friendly Food and Traditional Orchards on Sunday, 20th October.
For families, the Gruffalo sculptures, Gruffalo Quiz trail, and woodland playground offer fun activities for children.
Queenswood Country Park & Arboretum is a great destination for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty of autumn in a tranquil setting.
