About the role
The Flycatcher is Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s natural history journal, published annually. Historically, it has been printed and posted, free, to all members of the Trust. In 2022 we took the decision to give members free access to an online copy and to make printed copies available for sale in our shops and on our website.
With the vacancy of Editor coming up, we are keen to take this opportunity to review and revitalise this publication with the aim of making it more reflective of the breadth of conservation work in the county, more visually attractive and accessible and broadening and increasing the readership.
While we are committed to continuing to offer our members free access to a digital version which they can read online or download, it is essential that the income we receive from sales of printed copies cover the costs of printing and design.
Key responsibilities:
-
Reach out to individuals, groups and organisations across the county to invite suitable article submissions as well as sourcing images or illustrations.
-
Select content to be included in each issue to ensure a variety of subjects to inform and enthuse our readership and inspire them to take action for nature themselves.
-
Collaborate with the designer (this may be the Head of Action for Nature or an external designer) to agree and create the final layout.
Support:
The Editor will be primarily supported by the Head of Action for Nature who has worked closely with the previous editor and can collaborate on ideas to revitalise the publication; assist with design and liaising with the printers. They will also ensure that the publication is designed to our brand guidelines.
The Trust’s Membership Officer will be responsible for communicating with members and supplying them with their digital copy.
The Trust’s Retail Manager will ensure each issue is promoted and merchandised within our own retail outlets. They will also be responsible for finding other stockists e.g. local bookshops, TICs etc.
