Walking trails

Some areas of the reserve are stony, while others can be wet and muddy, even in summer; stout shoes/boots are advised. If you enter the two deer-fenced areas, it is vital to ensure that the gates are secured when you leave, to prevent grazing damage to regrowing coppice stools.

About the reserve

Much of this reserve consists of broad-leaved woodland, apart from a few open rides and clearings. The woodland is dominated by beech, with some oak and ash. Wild Service Trees and Whitebeams are frequent and most of the later have been recently determined to be a new species Sorbus herefordensis which is endemic to the Doward with a population centred on this reserve.

The rides, clearings, and latterly, the newly coppiced areas are also of great entomological interest, with populations of a variety of butterflies including Grizzled Skipper and Silver-washed Fritillary. Miners Rest is part of The Doward Living Landscape.
