Notes from the Field: December at The Parks

Coppicing Alder along the streamside at The Parks

What a difference a week makes…
It was easy going in the good weather - here's Nick getting stuck into breaking down the felled alder...

... but snow does not put off our hardy volunteers! The same scene 6 days later. Despite deep snow on the ground, the Wednesday group still managed a good day of burning brash.

Coppicing alder helps to maintain a healthy stream-side habitat by creating age and height structure. The work was done carefully and in line with guidelines as the reserve is especially important for a number of European Protected species.
